MANNING Valley Rifle Club champion Don Powell has qualified to represent Australia in the 2019 World Rimfire and Air Rifle Benchrest Federation (WRABF) Championships to be held in South Africa. Powell, who shoots at the club’s Koorainghat range, qualified in no less than four categories - light varmint rimfire, heavy varmint rimfire, heavy varmint air rifle and light varmint air rifle. Four different rifles are needed to effectively compete in the four events, two .22LR rimfire and two .177 calibre air rifles. Powell’s performance in the 2017 and 2018 national titles qualified him for the Australian team. Fellow members are hoping the 72-year-old will emulate another competitor at the club, who was 76 years old when shooting .22 Rimfire Benchrest in France in 2014 he shot four world records.
Don Powell will be in the Australian side to contest the world championships next year.
