“The Art of Ageing will challenge our views on older people in NSW,” says the gallery’s director Rachel Piercy.
“A learner driver, a gymnast and a ukulele player are among the extraordinary characters featured in the exhibition – it’s a real celebration of the lives of older people in our community.”
Commissioned by the NSW Government, the Art of Ageing highlights the incredible lives of seniors and promote inclusive communities for all generations, and will feature at Manning Regional Art Gallery from Friday, November 30 until January 13, 2019, including Julie’s works featuring local residents.
Minister for Ageing, Tanya Davies said the exhibition aims to challenge perceptions of ageing and demonstrate the diversity and experiences of older people across the state.
“Misconceptions about the lives of older people are prevalent in our community, but the experience of ageing is unique. Many older people are artists, athletes, business owners, farmers and volunteers, and this Exhibition challenges people's perceptions."
As a part of the exhibition, the Wall Project will feature a project called “Before I Die I Want to…”. Visitors are invited to write their answers on a piece of paper which will be attached to the wall for all to read.
The exhibition will travel to 21 locations before July 2019, and comprises the work of five photographers from Wagga Wagga, Molong, Mudgee, Goulburn and Taree’s Julie Slavin.
The Art of Ageing will be launched by MidCoast mayor David West, along with concurrent exhibition 'A Bug's Life', at 2pm on Saturday, December 1.
Special guests will include Stephen Bromhead MP, representing the NSW Minister for Ageing, Tanya Davies. The opening is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.
