With donations benefiting Ronald McDonald House Newcastle, residents at Ingenia Gardens Taree have put their decades of knitting experience to good use to provide a little extra comfort for seriously-ill children who are away from home.
A group of six residents and operations manager Stephen McLean ventured to Ronald McDonald House Newcastle to share morning tea with families and personally deliver hand-crafted beanies and teddy bears.
Mr McLean said residents loved using their knitting skills and experience to help others in need.
“The group was thrilled to be of service and give what they could to Ronald McDonald House Newcastle,” Mr McLean said.
“Most of our residents have been knitting for decades and this worthy cause provided the ideal opportunity to put their talents to good use.
“When the Ingenia Communities partnership kicked off in May, we knew we wanted to contribute, and this initiative is the perfect way for our residents to get involved.
“Knitting has significant benefits for residents, with many seeing an increase in their dexterity, improvement in their hand-eye coordination and an extended range of motion in their fingers and wrists.”
Ingenia Gardens Taree resident Anna Sinclair said Ronald McDonald House Charities was a great charity and one she loved being able to offer her help to.
“I have been knitting for almost 68 years and being able to get together with the rest of the knitting group and make something special for a seriously-ill child or their family is a wonderful feeling,” Ms Sinclair said.
“The little knitted beanies are my favourite to make, especially with colourful yarn, I really do hope whoever they are given to is able to enjoy them and it makes them feel just a little bit better.
“I really enjoy getting together with the rest of the community to have a chat and a cuppa while we knit our teddies and beanies, we are all such good friends.”
Ingenia Gardens Taree residents will continue to knit teddies and beanies for children in need as they prepare for the busy Christmas period.
