Variation of the ATO Scam
Scammers pretending to be from the ATO are contacting members of the public and claiming that there are outstanding tax debts and threatening people with arrest if the debt is not paid immediately.
The scam has morphed to a tactic where the scammers are using technology to make it look like the calls originate from a legitimate ATO phone number.
This number may appear on caller ID, be left on voice mail messages for call backs, or directed by *69 for call back functionality. Scammers do this to make the calls seem more valid when they call people a second time. Most frequently the number appearing is 6216 1111, but other numbers have been used as well.
Be vigilant for any suspicious phone calls and warn your friends and family to be aware of this scam, especially if they use a tax agent. If you have any doubts about a call you receive, don’t hesitate to hang up and report it on 1800 008 540.
For more details on this scam and other ATO impersonation scams, visit Scam alerts or share the message with your social network on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.
Craft at Old Bar
Christmas is fast approaching and Christmas boxes for the Samaritans are due on October 31. Please remember them as they make such a difference to children around the world who otherwise would not receive a gift.
Our workshop will be a woven paper bookmark which is fairly easy and one that will make a great project to use with children or grandchildren throughout the Christmas break.
Requirements include three pieces of sturdy patterned paper about A4 size, each with different patterns and thin ribbon or wool for a tassel. Another option offered the same day is a pop-up card. There will be enough time to participate in both workshops if you so desire.
Remember our trading table; please bring your items for sale and cash for purchases. Further information is available from 6553 2500 or 0415 785 608.
