Structural reforms are needed in the dairy industry to ensure local dairy farmers are not only sustainable, but have the capacity to grow and flourish in future. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission previously identified market failure in the dairy industry and the sector has since come to a united position regarding the need for a mandatory code of conduct. I’m delighted our dairy farmers support development of this code of conduct to improve their bargaining power.
I also support the proposal of a temporary retail levy going directly to dairy farmers to allow the industry breathing space to undertake broader fundamental structural change to secure the long term viability of the industry. The current returns to dairy farmers are unsustainable and I believe the processors and retailers have a moral and a national interest obligation to ensure dairy farmers remain sustainable.
Local schools will soon receive their annual educational kits for Remembrance Day. Today we know November 11, as Remembrance Day, but it has its origins when the Armistice to end the fighting during the First World War was signed. After the Second World War the day was renamed. Educating our next generation on the origins and significance of Remembrance Day, including observing a minute’s silence at 11am, is vitally important.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs educational pack promotes the observance of Remembrance Day. The 2018 poster features four portraits of men and women who served during the Gallipoli campaign. The portraits were created by combining one hundred portraits of men and women who have served in the three services of the ADF in the past century.
I encourage all schools, students and communities to get involved in Remembrance Day services marking the centenary of the First World War Armistice, and to remember all those who have suffered or died in our nation’s wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Schools will receive the educational kit in September, with resources available to download on the Anzac portal.
