The 14-year-old has been named in the NSW under 15 to play in the national all schools event in Sydney next November. Quedesha understands the leading two players in the boys and girls divisions will make the Australian side.
“I don’t know how I’ll go… I don’t know who I’ll be playing and I don’t know the course,’’ she said.
However, she intends to give herself every chance of producing a strong performance. Quedesha spends most of her spare time on the golf course, either playing or practising under the guidance of Taree professional, Wayne Dodd.
“I’m going to give it a go,’’ she said when asked about her chances in the tournament and or possible Australian selection.
Quedesha is the Manning River Times-Iguana Sportstar of the Week, earning a $50 open order at Iguana.
The Australian championship will be played in November. As part of her preparation Quedesha hopes to have a round with a cousin, the Wollongng-based Tahnia Ravnjak, who turned professional this year.
“I’ve never met her, but I’ve been in contact with her and we’re hoping to have a game together. It’ll depend on her schedule,’’ Quedesha said.
Golf has been an obsession for Quedesha since she was four and had her first hit with her dad and grandfather. When she was nine she joined a junior development group playing out of Kew. Quedesha now plays at either Kew or Taree.
Her handicap currently sits on 11.
“My ambition is to get to single figures by Christmas,’’ she explained, while admitting she needs to work on her short game.
“I think I can do that.’’
She’s in the Hunter Academy of Sport and also represented the Hunter Region in schools events for the past three years.
Recently she was awarded the Emma De Groot Scholarship from the Central North Coast Women’s Golf Assocation, an area that takes in clubs from Bulahdelah to Woolgoola. Quedesha has already spent some of the $500 from the scholarship to buy a new sand wedge, with the rest to go towards costs to travelling to tournaments. Quedesha is also thankful of the support she receives from the residents and staff at the Whiddon Group at Laurieton, where her mum works.
Her CV currently boasts junior open wins at Nelson Bay, Forster and Taree. She was named in the State side after finishing second in a tourmanent at Forster earlier this year. In what will be busy November, Quedesha has also been nominated to play in the State junior pro-am in Sydney.
