Luke grew up in the Manning, attending primary and high school in Wingham.
He’s back in Australia following what he describes as a “really big extended trip to Europe that lasted 11 years. “I’ve come back and seen everything with fresh eyes,” he said. “I can’t get over the light, the intensity and saturation of colour.”
He said while in Europe he has been living in Prague (Czech Republic), which is grey and dull for six months of the year. "I go out at night and it just comes to life.”
A mutual friend put him in touch with Wendie Patch from The Other Side Art Cafe and an exhibition organised. The official opening happens this Friday, August 17, at 5.30pm and the cafe is staying open until 8pm so people can view the works.
His said his style is impressionist. Pointing to one of his works he said it could be “any quintessential pub on the corner in Australia”.
Following his schooling in Wingham, Luke went on to study art and pedagogy at university. After a year he went to the Newcastle art college, Hunter Institute of Technology. “That changed everything. “
He exhibited in Newcastle between 2002 and 2007, and was represented by a gallery. After an almost sold out show he decided it was time to do the “ultimate graduation as an artist” and go to Europe. His plan was to stay for three months but it turned into 11 years.
