Once a month five year 10 students and two teachers visit the kitchen in Victoria Street near Fotheringham Park to “cook up a storm” for the lunch service. The kitchen provides free meals to vulnerable members of the Taree community five-days-a-week, Monday to Friday, between noon and 1pm. On average, about 21 meals are served each day of operation, according to service provider, CatholicCare, but on this Friday lunch service the students worked to serve 43 meals of red curry chicken wings, fried rice, potato bake, pumpkin and sweet potato soup, cauliflower with cheese sauce and fruit sponge with custard.

Mrs Ryan said St Clare’s involvement in Taree Community Kitchen is going from strength to strength.
”Students learn a variety of skills including washing up, sweeping the floor, peeling potatoes, serving food and presenting it nicely.
“We were there from about 9.30am until 2pm and enjoy every minute of cooking and serving food to the Taree community members. It’s exhausting but it’s fantastic.”
The students who worked in the kitchen were Dani Altham, Clare Chapman, Luke Earley, Jessica Horsburgh and Oscar Norman and Mrs Ryan said “they were fantastic even when out of their comfort zone.”
