The RENEW NSW meeting, which will take place over Thursday and Friday (August 16-17), will be opened by MidCoast Council mayor, David West, and will feature guest speakers from Local Government NSW and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
High on the agenda are current “hot” topics in waste management including China’s national sword policy and the status of the NSW container deposit scheme.
“We’re delighted to welcome delegates from across NSW, convening locally for the first time in over a decade,” MidCoast Council’s manager of waste, health and regulatory services, John Cavanagh said.
“These meetings are an important forum to collaborate and prioritise issues related to waste management, as we work together to innovate and re-imagine approaches to improving resource recovery.
“The new CRC, which opened in November 2017 is part of a unique waste management centre at Tuncurry, constructed over two years as the old landfill reached capacity and was closed.
“Its design has generated much interest among the broader waste industry, so we’re looking forward to showcasing it to the group on Friday.”
Under the umbrella of RENEW NSW, representatives from more than 100 NSW councils work together with the NSW EPA to proactively monitor and improve waste management and resource recovery practices in rural, regional and metropolitan areas.
“While the meeting will cover a diverse range of sometimes complex themes, at its simplest level we are all working hard to promote the ‘refuse, reuse, reduce and recycle’ message within our respective communities,” John added.
RENEW NSW is supported by the NSW EPA waste less, recycle more initiative funded from the waste levy.
