The Expo has it’s origins in the 1980’s where local students would bus their way up to Port Macquarie, but since 2002 has been held locally within the Chatham High School Multi Purpose Centre.
The Expo is designed to cater for the school transition needs of all local students, private and public, whether they are university bound, vocational or trade focused or looking to join the local workforce.
The event helps assist regional disadvantage by allowing students to be able to interact with a host of post-school transition options that they would normally have to travel great distance to access.
The Careers And Future Options Expo and the sister event in Port Macquarie are managed by the Lower North Coast Careers Advisers Association with kind sponsorship support being provided by the NSW Department of Education and the assistance of the staff and students of Chatham High School.
It is one of the keystones to assisting local students plan their post-school school goals.
One stop shop
It is designed to be a ‘one stop’ shop of more than 50 exhibitor booths for students and their parents or carers to discuss as many post–school tertiary and employment options as possible.
In attendance are all the major Universities in NSW and Southern Queensland; private vocationally orientated colleges offering a broad range of course options, TAFE, Police and the Australian Defence Force, local job service providers and as well local employers and government services.

For Year 12 students considering university entry, the Expo coincides with the opening of the university application process and students can pick up valuable hints on alternate entry schemes such as early entry and bonus ATAR ranks.
For 2019 university entry there have been a number of important changes, especially with school recommendation or early entry programs.
A visit to the UAC (University Admission Centre) stand just inside the door would be a must for all Year 12 students.
Year 11 students are heading into their final year of schooling and should be starting to cement some ideas on how they will transition from school. There will be many opportunities around the hall to explore these ideas.
For some, the ADF ‘Gap Year’ is attractive and this very competitive scheme should be in place for applications early in 2019.
Students would be best advised to drop over to the Australian Defence Force double stand at the rear of the hall for all things ‘defence.’

Year 10 students currently undertaking Higher School Certificate subject selection will gain much about the importance of selecting course options that benefit their plans and for many the expo allows them to investigate some of the many exciting careers available.
The day is organised and managed by a small team of local careers advisers from Chatham, Taree, Wingham and the Great Lakes areas and 1000 local students from Years 10, 11 and 12 are expected to attend.
During the day, students from hospitality, tourism and events courses will be conducting work placement as a value-added opportunity that the expo provides.
To make the most of this opportunity students should be researching course options, early entry schemes, scholarship opportunities and employment prospects.
Parents and carers are most welcome at the Expo during any part of the morning.
Enjoy your day.
