Not all vintage club members are interested or involved in the racing scene or venues, except for Phillip Island, so may not be aware that the Australian Classic Dirt Track Titles, pre-1975 machines, were held at the Mick Doohan Raceway just outside Brisbane on the first weekend of this month.

My interest lies in the fact that my good friend Tel was pit man to a club mate of his from his Sydney club of Penrith.
Tel won the Australian championship title in 2007 riding his 125cc Elsinore in its class but Bret was riding Bultacos and was hoping for a podium finish.
Although Bret is a class river,it’s the combination of man and machine and he wasn’t doing all that well until Tel gave him a few pointers which made the difference and put him out front.
There isn’t much more value than experience and although Tel didn’t win every race he entered, he learned a lot which gave him titled in his racing career.
It’s too late for the writer, I didn't have the inner fortitude to start with and Tel has had to retire from racing due to medical reasons. But he can still advise other riders.
Bret has taken three bikes including a Slider, which belonged to his late father.
Not doing well on the other two, he heeded Tel’s advice, rode it under his instructions and took the title.
On the podium he dedicated the win to his late father and Tel’s timely advice. A win win situation.
Incidently this is what Tel did for his late father when he won the state title in 2012, both recognising their parents in a fitting and lasting way.
