EARLY this week thousands of gannets were sitting in the water a few hundred metres off the spit in the mouth of the Manning River, which was an unusual sight.

At the same time gannets were diving into the water close to the spit and in the mouth of the river looking for a feed.
The gannets were there all day. A number of experienced outside fishermen said that they have never seen so many in the one place.
A tailor of 3.5kgs was caught from the gantry early in the week. Bob Smith from Harrington scored an 8kg mulloway on a metal lure from the wall.
Bream and luderick have been on the bite and tailior, salmon and bream have been caught from Crowdy beach.
Outside anglers have been scoring good sized snapper from the southern grounds this week.
Lyn Begg landed one of 6.9kgs early in the week.
Meanwhile the Australian Anglers Association (AAA) starts its championship on Saturday. Beach, rock and estuary weigh-ins will be held near the parking area at Club Harrington.
Deep sea weigh-ins will be held at Crowdy Head.
