Taree locals have rallied together to do what they can to raise awareness for dementia, its many forms and those who are dealing with this terrible condition by participating in the Memory Walk, organised by Taree’s Kimberly Wright in memory of her grandfather.
Ingenia Gardens Taree village manager Amanda Howton said residents were excited to prove that they too could walk the course’s two kilometre track.
“This will be the second year we have participated in the walk and we have a very eager team of residents who are excited to play their part in fundraising,” Ms Howton said.
“More than 425,000 Australians are estimated to be living with dementia including a few of our residents, and many more have had loved ones affected.”

Resident Patricia Welna, 72, who moved into Ingenia Gardens Taree 12 months ago said she wasn’t going to miss being a part of the walk this year.
“When I heard about our involvement in the Memory Walk, I wasn’t going to miss it – my husband was diagnosed with dementia at only 74 years old and it was difficult to see. He recently went into fulltime care, but he still joins me and my new friends for tea and cake,” Mrs Welna said.
“In the earlier stages of my husband’s diagnosis, I did research to see what information and support services were available to assist us, but it’s hard to navigate this unfamiliar territory while dealing with a diagnosis.
“I love that the whole community is getting involved in the walk. I’m going to walk the full two kms – trust me that’s a long way for a little lady like me, but raising awareness and money for this debilitating condition is important to me.”
