Now, Steve Fitton has been named the number one afternoon radio announcer in Sydney.
The Taree local returned to airwaves at the start of 2018 with WSFM.
His afternoon program rated higher than fellow radio heavyweights 2GB, KIIS and Smooth FM in the release of the latest ratings.
“I am proud, it was really good to get there as quickly as possible,” Steve said.
“It’s all still a bit surreal.”
Born and raised in the Manning, Steve went to Taree High School and always had an interest in radio.

- Steve Fitton
Steve started out in Newcastle in 1988 before a move to Perth.
He stayed there for 12 years before parting ways in 2011 for a move back to the area.
Steve soon started up his own business before linking up with Wingham Coaches and later Eggins Comfort Coaches.
Steve said many of his passengers were shoppers and school children and he wanted to let them know of his latest venture.
“I met a lot of lovely shoppers who loved to ‘gas bag’ and gossip with the driver,” he said.
“I got to chat with a lot of great school kids too.”
Steve said the reason why he didn't have a chance to say goodbye was that he was sworn to secrecy regarding his new job.
“I couldn’t tell anyone what was happening, not even Eggins,” Steve said.
Steve is a self professed ‘vehicle nerd’.
He recently joined the Sydney Bus Museum and drove vintage buses in the Sydney CBD.
Steve also owns several cars that he has worked on over the years.
“I like to tinker, I can’t sit still,” he said.
This year, Steve celebrates 25 years on the air.
His current program airs on WSFM between noon and 4pm Monday to Friday.
Steve described it as a music based program with an upbeat focus on the 1980s and 1990s.
“It’s like a top 40 for the over 40s,” Steve said.
“It’s what I was dancing to at my Year 10 formal.”
Steve’s show can be streamed at www.wsfm.com.au.
“Apparently Service NSW at Taree often have WSFM streaming in the waiting room,” Steve added.
