The extensive roadworks, which commenced in mid-April, target the split level section of Pulteney Street between Albert and Wynter Streets, and include a full reconstruction in both directions, as well as replacing footpaths, stairs and median islands, and improving roadside drainage.
In stage one, contractors focused on the southbound lanes and this side will be reopened to traffic from Monday, June 18.
“While this is a busy part of Taree’s CBD, it’s been pleasing to see local motorists travelling with care in and around the area of the works,” said Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s manager, projects and engineering.
“Issues encountered by contractors when they excavated on the southbound side have impacted our timings, but at the same time we are able to pre-empt issues with sub-surface conditions as we move to the northbound side.”
Changes to be made as a result of stage one findings include greater excavation depth to provide more pavement thickness for the full length of the targeted section, allowing for newly constructed road to achieve the desired 40-year design life, Mr Pattison said.
As a result of the deep excavation, the northbound lane will be closed to traffic.
Vehicular access to premises will be restricted, however night-time parking will be made available for residents along the southbound lane. Pedestrian access will continue to be maintained on both sides of the street.
Stage two starts on Thursday, June 14 and is expected to continue for up to four weeks, weather-permitting.
“Work will be completed to reopen the northbound lanes as soon as possible, and our contractors will be liaising closely with businesses and residents in the affected strip,” Mr Pattison said.
In stage three, both lanes will receive a final asphalt seal for a smoother, more durable driving surface. It is anticipated the project will be completed during September.
