Bruce Hopper is the local genetics counsellor for the lower Mid North coast and has been in the role since 1998.
He will be talking about genetics and family histories. This includes hereditary breast and bowel cancers as well as some other conditions.
He will also be talking about the new initiative that the federal government launched in the last budget called ‘McKenzie’s Mission’ – pre-pregnancy genetic screening to eradicate life-threatening genetic conditions.
Bruce will have a combination of presentation, stories and ‘what if’ scenarios in a ‘chalk and talk format - an interactive presentation.
He has been involved in the Jeans for Genes day fundraising for many years and is annually heard on the airwaves of the Manning and Great Lakes as well as being seen in the local newspapers.
Bruce’s ties to the area go way back. His grandfather was the first student at Old Bar Public School, because his great grandfather was the first principal at the school. He is married and has two children, and is part of the local triathlon club and did the Melbourne marathon last year.
He has travelled in Africa, Mongolia and Europe, and has been kicked off Stonehenge twice in one night. His big dream is to go kayaking in the ice floats of Antarctica.
The evening starts at 6.30pm and the cost is $25, which includes a two-course meal with complimentary tea and coffee after the meal. Please let us know of any special dietary requirements.
Our ladies on the door would greatly appreciate if you could bring along the correct money, this saves us the task of chasing up a lot of change.
If you would like to attend this month, please RSVP to Susan Ryan 6553 5150 or Marilyn Thomas 6551 4316 by 10am Monday June 25. Late RSVPs will not be accepted.
