Call it coincidence, call it fate - but the happy confluence of the loves and life of Andy Snelgar and Andy Wallace, expressed in Ocean Dreaming is an amazing addition to the Mid Coast's artistic scene.
By coincidence, each Andy was seeking the other out, attracted by the appreciation of each other's body of work. Andy Snelgar was after a timber board and Andy Wallace looking to purchase some of Andy’s traditional art.
Upon meeting, the pair discovered they had a good deal in common, not least a passion for all things surfing, a love for traditional crafts and most importantly a commitment to authenticity in their respective arts.
With this foundation Andy Wallace approached Andy Snelgar with the idea they team up and do a series of hand shaped timber boards by Andy Wallace featuring the intricate traditional carvings of Andy Snelgar.
Ocean Dreaming is a unique exhibition of classic hollow and “alaia” surfboards featuring the cultural imagery of our ancient home.
Also showing is Artexpress, which showcases the best regional art works from 2017 HSC students, including one from Great Lakes Senior College student Petra Flower.
Petra’s body of work explores a teenager’s view of adulthood as they face decisions that will shape their future.
“The overarching concepts investigated in my body of work are the opportunities and uncertainties of the future,” she said.
“The future includes new beginnings and directions, as well as personal growth and the emotions that follow.”
Artexpress 2018 is a series of 10 individually-curated exhibitions held throughout the year and hosted across metropolitan and regional NSW galleries and art centres. In 2017/2018, 174 works were chosen by curators for the 10 exhibitions.
Works range from painting, photomedia, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and documented forms to textiles and fibre, ceramics, time-based forms and collections of works.
Artexpress is a joint partnership of the NSW Education Standards Authority and the NSW Department of Education.
