THERE will be some great wave action in Port Macquarie over the June long weekend with the world’s only two-day team bodyboarding tournament expected to feature some of the best talent in the country.
Port Macquarie is known as the bodyboarding capital of Australia and the Team’s Challenge on June 9-10 is expected to be a drawcard for talent including two-time world champion Damien King and Newcastle’s big wave expert John Cruickshank.
Local talent including Peter Gleeson, Shane Chalker, Luke Filipek and Simon Andrews are also expected to deliver some great performances against more than 60 bodyboarders from up and down the east coast.
Forster Bodyboarding Club champion Millie Chalker is expected to test the competition in the women’s event against multi-Australian title winner and former Port Macquarie local Britt Ladley from the Gold Coast.
Chalker last month returned home from the 2018 NSW HIF Bodyboard State Titles with a second in the open women’s division under her belt.
Competing in her second state championships, the 15-year-old secured a win in her first final and a third in the second final, which was enough to earn a second in the open women’s.
Thrilled with her place, Millie said she just couldn't believe she won her first final against well known competitor, Shauna Gillett.
In its 31st year, the Team’s Challenge hosted by the Port Macquarie Bodyboarding Association is a non elimination competition allowing every competitor three rounds on the waves.
Six teams are entered including a vintage bodyboarding crew, an all girls team and Port Macquarie old boys.
