Much needed wins before long weekend break

Rhys Edwards earned a 9-4 fifth game win over Larissa Collins.

Rhys Edwards earned a 9-4 fifth game win over Larissa Collins.

The top four seeds in Monday night’s first grade successfully handled the first round of the finals played this week and will have two weeks to prepare for the second round due to the Queen’s Birthday holiday next Monday.

Top seed Rodney Simpson and Leigh Halloran played their match using contrasting styles with Halloran preferring to take the pace off the ball but it was Simpson’s all court game that got him over the line in four; second seed Darryl Moscatt’s control was there to see in his 9-6 fifth game win over Alison Haigh; third seed Justin Mather showed the advantages of a long reach when he defeated Darren Sherry 10-9 in the fourth; while Rhys Edwards, another all court player had plenty to do to keep a hard working Larissa Collins at bay and earn a 9-4 fifth game win.

Second division produced a repeat of the first grade results with the top seeds getting through.

Barry Ruprecht, Ashleigh Mather and Glenn Weir recorded strong wins while fourth seed Michelle McGillivray in her match with Gary Smith had to fight her way back from two games down to get home 9-7 in the fifth.

James Smith produced a surprise result in the Thursday night first grade competition defeating front runner Gavin Pennell 17-15 in the fifth.

These two players have only once been more than one point apart on the ladder in this competition and with this result now share the top spot with just one more round to go to the start of the finals.

Meanwhile, Darryl Moscatt downed Darren Sherry in three straight to maintain his third place one point behind the leaders while Rhys Edwards is adrift by three more points following his four game win over Daniel Strybis.

Second grade leader Katie Pennell defeated Tegan Lynch in three to stay a point ahead of Larissa Collins and a further point ahead of Leigh Halloran while a swarm of players are scrambling for the top places in third division with Michelle McGilivray, Gary Smith, Trevor Brown, Sonya Payton, Andrew Gucul and Barry Ruprecht leading the qualifiers.
