They have been recruited by former Wingham apprentice jockey, dual Melbourne Cup winner, Corey Brown who has the honour of having a local cup named after him at the meeting.
It is the $30,000 Corey Brown Cup for Benchmark 65 Handicap gallopers over 1300m.
Brown agreed to return for the Wingham Cup meeting after an approach by the chairman of the club, Greg Coleman, at a reception held in Brown’s honour after his latest Melbourne Cup win on Rekindling.
The jockey has a function room at the racecourse named in his honour after his first Melbourne Cup win on Shocking in 2009.
Brown was excited by the invite and to have a cup named in his honour and he no doubt wants it to be special and a memorable day for local racegoers and people he has been associated with in starting his foray into the jockey’s ranks.
He will be joined by Tye Angland, Glyn Schofield, James McDonald, Adam Hyeronimus and Andrew Adkins.
McDonald is a top Kiwi and former Godolphin, Sydney premier jockey, Angland is running second in the State for the number of winners he has ridden, and Schofield is also towards the top of the honour board.
Adkins was an apprentice jockey from Port Macquarie before heading to the stable of Ron Quinton at Randwick and has won numerous premierships before ascending to the senior jockey ranks early this season.
A light plane has been organised to bring the group to Taree for the races and give them a return flight.
Coleman said their heavy schedules meant that they would be available for races two to five, during which they will battle for the honours of winning the inaugural Corey Brown Cup, the event being added to the yearly schedule.
He said the club hoped for a good crowd to witness what is thought to be the most number of Sydney jockeys to be at the local meeting.
The $35,000 Wingham Services Club Showcase Wingham Cup is worth $35,000 and is over 1600m.
Being a Showcase meeting means that every race is worth a minimum of $30,000 (normally $20,000) and as an added bonus a special Country Maiden Showcase race over 1400m on the card is worth $40,000.
The Wingham Services Club will be holding a Calcutta on the Wingham Cup on Thursday, May 31, and tickets are now available from the club for your chance to “own” the 2018 Wingham Cup winner.
