The National Film and Sound Association (NFSA) recently uploaded a video to their YouTube account entitled ‘Taree- The Capital of the Manning’ which showcases the hustle and bustle of life in the area circa 1950s and 1960s.
The film was produced by the Commonwealth Film Unit 1959 and was directed by Jack Allan and Jack Rogers.
A spokesperson for the NFSA said the video was part of the Australian Diary and Australian Colour Diary Series that was produced to showcase Australian locations, events and quirky stories of interest to audiences around the country.
They were presented in a newsreel style and aired in cinemas as a short before the feature presentation.
For those who weren’t around to experience life in the town during this period, it is remarkable to see vision of establishments such as the Manning Hotel, Taree Golf Club and Manning Hospital, people participating in hobbies such as sailing and swimming and natural sites like Ellenborough Falls.
It highlighted key trades during the time, namely farming for oysters and minerals rutile and zircon.
Not to mention a showcase of the fashion and vehicles of the time.
As the voice-over said in the film, “Taree is both picturesque and productive.”
