It’s more than a pile of sticks and stuff that’s stuck on rocks in the Manning River under Martin Bridge in Taree. It’s home to … beavers … industrious and very lost beavers if you consider Editor Bell’s name for the emerging island, “It’s Beaver Island!” she says.
It’s a name that a few in our office have chosen to embrace as rumour has it there is another pile of sticks of similar size and construction floating up river, somewhere near The Bight Bridge in Wingham. Advertising rep McDonald laughs and suggests Wingham’s emerging island should be called Upper Beaver.
Yep, it needs a name and I think we can do better than Beaver Island.
Now MidCoast Council says it doesn’t really have any interest in moving the pile of sticks and a very helpful spokeswoman says it’s likely to wash away during the next flood, so I’m predicting it could be here for a while. The very helpful spokeswoman also liked my need for a name, and offered up two, yes two suggestions for consideration ... Gomer … as in Gomer Pile ... or Deborah and we could call it Debris for short. Noice.
In the service of the public interest and with a desire to inspire I reached out to Phil Davies Aerial Photography. Phil captures iconic landmarks in the Manning Valley and he kindly said yes to my request for a bird’s eye view of – Beaver Island, Gomer Pile or Deborah – as it sits mid-river.
The resulting video is great and I’m hoping it will inspire you to offer up a name, or two, for the pile of sticks. The suggestions will be collated, I’ll create a poll and then a public vote can democratically determine if Editor Bell has naming rights.
It needs a name. It’s a bit of fun … and I’ve got to say, Gomer, is going to be pretty hard to beat.
