Phil Lucock was returned as member for Lyne despite as strong showing by Taree solicitor Peter Carey in the federal election which saw Labor back in power for the first in 21 years.

Wauchope defeated Wingham in the Group Three rugby league grand final, coached by former international front rower John Wittenburgh. First try scorers were Ray Hardy for Wauchope and Tom Gillogly scoring Wingham’s only try of the game.
