But Lance Scriven has done something a bit more extraordinary than that- he has helped save lives.
On April 24, Lance made his 250th blood donation at the Taree centre.
Mr Scriven first gave blood in the early 1990s and hasn’t looked back.
“I first came in to find out what my blood group was,” Mr Scriven said.
“It didn’t hurt that much so I kept coming.”
Mr Scriven started to become a frequent donor once he began to give plasma.
“Whole blood is only four times a year but with plasma we can do it much more frequently,” Mr Scriven said.
“Mostly, I’m down fortnightly.”
He encouraged others to give blood donating a try.
“Come in and visit, they’re nice people.
“The first is always the hardest.
“They stick needles in you but they don’t bite and there’s a good cuppa afterwards,” Mr Scriven said.
Mr Scriven is set to move to Dubbo after working for MidCoast Water.
“There’s a donor centre there (Dubbo) so I’ll be giving them a visit sometime soon,” Mr Scriven said
He’s unsure if he will manage one more donation at the Taree centre.
Taree Blood Centre manager Kellie Harrison hoped that more people like Mr Scriven will become frequent visitors.
“We really look forward to having people like you come in and we’re really going to miss you.
“Taree’s loss is Dubbo’s gain,” Ms Harrison said to Mr Scriven before he made the donation.
