No, that’s not correct. It’s not getting embarrassing, it is embarrassing.
We’re talking about footy tipping. NRL footy tipping to be precise.
Now, this correspondent has been in various footy tipping competitions (FTC) for as long as there have been footy tipping competitions (FTC). We’ve had a share of successes, although winning isn’t everything. Who are we kidding here? Of course winning is everything. Otherwise they wouldn’t keep the score. No-one remembers who came second.
However, this has been a year like no other for we footy tipping aficionados (FTA) with upsets every second match. Saints somehow on top of the pile. The Roosters frustratingly inconsistent. Manly in dissaray. West Tigers, a side that would have been lucky to win a game in Group Three last year, knocking over all the heavyweights. Forget the banks. There should be Royal Commission (RC) into the NRL. After six weeks this column is reeling in the cellar of both FTCs we’re involved. We’ve become a laughing stock.
That’s bad enough. Yet it only gets worse.
This correspondent’s new friend, The Happy Camper (THC) joined the footy tipping comp (FTC) at her place of (occasional) employment. The Mayo Hospital we believe it’s called.
THC doesn’t follow footy. Yes, strange as it may seem, these people do exist.
“But it will be a bit of fun,’’ she laughed.
“Footy tipping isn’t fun,’’ we warned.
“It’s a minefield. Friendships have been irreparably damaged over the years because of footy tipping. It wouldn’t surprise if at least one of the World Wars started because of a footy tipping comp.
“Footy tipping is Deadly Serious.’’
“Don’t be silly,’’ she admonished.
“Now, what’s the draw this week? Who are the Bears playing?’’
(For those unaware, the Bears, aka North Sydney, haven’t been in the NRL this century).
Of course going into last weekend’s matches THC was third in her comp. An NRL guru she’s taken to describing herself.
So before last weekend’ we sought her opinion.
“Souths or Canberra?’’ we asked.
THC gave us a quizzical look.
“The Rabbits or the Raiders,’’ we added.
“Rabbits,’’ she replied.
We agreed it was a wise choice: “Burgess is back. Inglis is approaching his best.’’
THC was totally perplexed before she explained why she opted for the Rabbitohs.
“Rabbits are soooo cute,’’ she said.
“How could you not take them.’’
That explains everything. It’s going to be a long year.
