Woods, 19, will take on Dean Stewart, a fighter he beat on the way to taking out the NSW 69kg elite open title last month. Stewart is determined to reverse the decision and is looking forward to the April 28 match-up.
Woods won the last encounter on points.
“I moved well, he was a bigger opponent, but it was close,’’ Woods told the Times after his win over Stewart.
Stewart is regarded as a formidable opponent. He has more than 50 fights to his credit and is rated as one of the strongest boxers in the division in NSW.
Woods started boxing at the Taree PCYC about five years ago and he has Peter Lewis in his corner. The veteran of 30 amateur bouts, Woods eventually hopes to turn professional. He now travels to the Central Coast once a week for specialised training with the PCYC High Performance Academy.
The fight will headline the 12 strong program at the Taree PCYC on April 28. This is the first boxing promotion conducted by the club in around three years.
There’ll be a strong contingent of Taree PCYC-trained boxers in action. Grace Brayne, who, like Woods, is part of the high performance academy, will be up against Emma Greentree from the Central Coast. This will be another re-match. Brayne has had three fights while Greentree is a 10 bout veteran.
While Greentree has more experience, observers believe the Taree boxer could have the edge in power and this is expected to be another close contest.
Ryan Spencer’s opponent has yet to be confirmed, however, Spencer has a reputation of only fighting the best in the country.
Brothers Jyah and Shannon Kent are former Taree fighters who are now based on the Central Coast. Jyah will make his ring debut agauisnt Rodney Peake, while Shannon’s opponent is yet to be determined.
Taree PCYC manager Justin Hayes said the first bout is expected to start around 6.30. He said there’ll be fighters from Wauchope, Forster-Tuncurry and Laurieton in action as well as those from other parts of the State.
