Family, friends and members of the Tinonee Rural Fire Brigade watched as NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) deputy commissioner Rob Rogers and Mid North Coast District manager superintendent Kam Baker presented her with the award and a lapel pin.
Shirley began her service in 1971 with her husband Bill as a member of the brigade’s management committee.

Her primary role in the brigade was in operations support to Bill’s functions as Tinonee brigade captain and Group Three captain in the Manning district.
This role saw Shirley be consistently involved with communication, catering and brigade administration.
Shirley was the brigade’s ‘go to’ person for the receipt and distribution of information between members occupied on the fire ground and their families.
For 28 years, Shirley was responsible for mustering initial and relief fire fighting crews and nearby brigades for assistance.
Her tireless work didn’t stop there, as Shirley was tasked with the organisation of onsite meals and refreshments for fire fighters.
Her contribution to all aspects of the brigade’s administration exceeds 45 years.
She was awarded life membership of the brigade in 2011 and was an active member in these roles until 2016.
Deputy commissioner Rogers said it is important to acknowledge people like Shirley for their commitment to the Rural Fire Service.
“Thank you very much for what you have done,” Deputy Commissioner Rogers said.
An emotional Shirley thanked the brigade for their ongoing work and for nominating her for the award.
Commendation of Service awards are primarily presented on May 4th in conjunction with International Firefighters Day (St Florian’s Day).
A recipient will be awarded to “recognise service of a meritorious nature, or outstanding actions in relation to fire service duties, administrative leadership, or exemplary performance of a specific difficult project or task, not involving bravery.”
