Harmony Day celebrates cultural diversity and builds respect and inclusiveness, and the theme for the day is Everyone Belongs.
The library is partnering once again with Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services and the Migrant Settlement Project to reflect on our community, our acceptance and inclusiveness of all cultures.
The library is calling on locals to help map our cultural diversity in an interactive display from now until Harmony Day. Residents are asked to call into the Taree Library and check the world map, Australian map showing the First Nations and the MidCoast Council regional map. Residents are encouraged to place a dot on any of the maps showing where you are from - it is hoped to collect a lot of dots and get a visual representation of our diversity.
Kicking off at 10.30am on March 20, the library will be hosting performances by Wingsong Choir and Taree High School's indigenous dancers Djarii Burraydjar and Girambit Wanggaliyn, followed by a multicultural morning tea. This is a chance to check out the maps and the dots, connect with others at the event and have a great time.
After a cuppa and chat, films including Charlie's Country and Constance on the Edge will be screened.
In Charlie's Country, displeased with the intervention of whitefella laws, Charlie takes off to live the old way and sets off a chain reaction of enlightening difficulties.
Constance on the Edge is a film about refugee resettlement and what it takes to belong. Filmed over 10 years, Constance on the Edge is an honest portrayal of one refugee family’s resettlement story in Australia. It gets to the heart of a contemporary untold story about the courage and resilience it takes to build new lives.
The films highlight the important role communities play in encouraging a sense of belonging and enabling participation for everyone.
The event is free, but bookings are necessary for the film screenings. For tickets and more information, please visit midcoastlibraries.com.au/events.
During March parents and carers of preschool aged children can bring their children to MidCoast Libraries to enjoy stories from around the world, craft and a morning tea in celebration of our cultural diversity.
