MidCoast Council provides the composting tutorial and is offering a subsidised compost bin for those participating.
The tutorial takes around 15 minutes to complete. And participants can put their learning into action when theyr claim a dome compost bin and aerator for just $20, around one third of its recommended retail price.
Composting is good for the environment and it saves households money.
“Composting is another way that people can help us improve recycling across the MidCoast region,” Amy Hill, MidCoast Council’s waste program co-ordinator, said.
More than 250kg of organic waste like kitchen scraps and garden clippings is produced per person every year. “If this ends up in our landfills it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate pollution,” Amy said.
As well as avoiding the expense and harsh chemicals in store-bought fertiliser, home composting provides with a free source of rich fertiliser for a healthier garden.
“People are also often surprised to find they’ll also cut down on water usage, as fertilising helps your garden retain moisture,” she said.
The free online tutorial and subsidised compost bin offer is exclusively available to MidCoast residents, and limited to one compost bin per household. Bins can be collected at MidCoast Council’s administration offices in Gloucester, Taree or Forster after completing the online tutorial and making payment.
