The green light for the project was given last month when member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, announced the project had been successful in obtaining $102,880 in funding from the State government’s Stronger Country Communities fund.
Plans include upgrading the parking area for caravans and RVs, installing more water taps for campers, installing a Dump Ezy dump point and upgrading the toilet block to include hot showers.
“We have visitors all the time,” said WAG’s Bill Kneipp who submitted the grant application.
“In summer we had up to 20 caravans there at a time.”
By improving the parking it is hoped up to 26 caravans will be able to fit on the site.
Improvements to the parking area include an improved gravel surface and the construction of a central access road.
Wingham Riverside Reserve attracts visitors from all over the world who often find the free camping site via the popular WikiCamps app or by word of mouth.
WAG member Ron Sky and other volunteers help service the area and believe it makes a valuable contribution to Wingham.
“It brings a lot of money into the town,” said Bill.
Making the reserve more comfortable for visitors was the main reason the community groups applied for an upgrade.
They used feedback from local users and campers to determine what was most needed at the reserve.
“It’s such a magnificant site,” added Bill.
While the groups are yet to determine the exact start date of the project, Bill expects work to take place during the winter months to be completed in time for the busy summer season later in the year.
This is welcome news for campers.
Scotty and Tanya Johnston from Bonnells Bay in Lake Macquarie enjoyed their recent stay and say all that’s missing is showers.
