The school has now entered a period of recess with numbers falling over recent years and only two students remaining.
“It was a sad time for the students, staff and families to see our beautiful school come to this,” said P and C president Julie Barlin.
“While we were very disappointed, we understood that the decision had to be made.”
Following many requests from past students and community members, the P and C has decided to hold a Farewell and School Reunion on the school grounds on Saturday, February 17.
“We want this to be a celebration of 155 years of education on Oxley Island and invite past students, staff and community members to come and join us in sharing memories and stories of our school,” Julie said.
“We would like people to record their stories and bring them along so these can be collated into a book to be kept with the school’s memorabilia and archives”.
The Oxley Island Hall Committee Inc has formed a subcommittee, The Oxley Island Public School Historical Preservation Society, who have been working with the Department of Education in securing items of historical significance for archiving and display in the future.
The P and C will host a light lunch of barbecue and salads.
Anyone wishing to attend is asked to bring a chair, a plate of desserts (cake/slice etc) to share and their own drinks.
As it is being held on school grounds, no alcohol can be consumed.
The event will be held from 1pm to 4pm February 17 and there will be photographs and memorabilia on display with some souvenirs from the 150th available for purchase.
RSVPs for catering purchase are requested via the Facebook page “I went to Oxley Island Public School” or by phone to Julie on 0428 473 754 by Wednesday February 14.
