Students are encouraged to use a QR Reader app to scan codes around the school.
These codes feature the voice of Uncle Russell Saunders, who describes each place in Gathang, such as djagilbaa meaning “eating place” or ngarralbaa meaning “our place of learning and listening.”
Other areas that feature the cultural signage include the science rooms, PD/H/PE rooms and the canteen.
Russell said the purpose of the initiative is to pass on the language to the community.
“It’s getting language out into our community and in our school.
“Taree High School now is especially putting it out there.
“Kids can walk past and read the language and overtime they will be able to say it in language,” Russell said.
