The team defeated competitors from Taree High School in round two for their zone at the camp, which was held on July 25 and 26.
Students from the public speaking and debating reading group were invited to attend the event, which consisted of intensive training sessions, mock debates, debating rounds, and the chance to watch the regional finals.
The camp presented a great opportunity for students from schools across the North Coast to meet new people, make friends, and get invaluable debating experience.
“I learned a lot from the camp,” said year eight student Harry Cole.
Sessions were led by experienced adjudicator and coach Tony Davies, and boosted students confidence and provided a chance to develop new skills to bring into the classrooms and to the podium.
Literary Week’s ‘great debate’ recently provided another opportunity for students to develop their skills of persuasion, as they took on a team of teachers, addressing the topic ‘All classes should be streamed’.
The students held their own against their teachers, despite having the odds stacked against them, and presented some great arguments for streaming all classes. But in the end, experience and wisdom won out, with the teachers scraping a victory.
Although saddened by their defeat, the students were motivated by the loss, and are determined to make a comeback at next year’s great debate.
