Local producer Linga Longa Farm Wingham is celebrating after winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Australian Food Awards (AFA) for their certified grass fed beef.
Farmers Lauren and Greg Newell started selling their beef online and through farmers markets five years ago and were the first farmers in NSW to become pasture certified through the Cattle Council of Australia.
“This is the first time we have entered out beef in an award and we are thrilled to be a bronze medallist, as it really confirms that all the hard work is paying off and our products really are of a high standard,” said Lauren.
The AFA, conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) builds on the success of RASV’s Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards (RMFFA) and is Australia’s leading national premium food awards program.
The awards offer entrants the opportunity to benchmark against set criteria; receive invaluable independent feedback from industry experts; and be rewarded for excellence.
Lauren and Greg believe that grass-fed beef — which cuts out both feedlots and the resource-intensive practice of raising grain just to feed cows — can catalyse a great change in Australian agriculture.
“Putting cattle back on pasture will be the beginning of more resilient, less energy-intensive farming systems that are more likely to survive in our future of higher energy costs, unstable climates, and depleted fresh water and mineral resources,” said Lauren.
