Antony Stott, a maths teacher at Moss Vale High, was thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for the Thunder team at Gibson Park in Station Street.
The club posted a statement on its website on Saturday night.
“Thirroul JFC is saddened by the tragic passing of one of our players, Antony Stott, during a match at Gibson Park today.
“The club passes on its deepest sympathies to Antony's family, team-mates and friends.
“Thirroul JFC would also like to express our gratitude to the players and committee members who attended very professionally to him at the field.”
Mr Stott played in the Community League Division 2 competition.
An ambulance spokesperson said the young man collapsed on the field.
The Mercury understands there was a public access defibrillator nearby which was used while the ambulance was called.
CPR was conducted at the scene before Mr Stott was loaded into an ambulance and continued to undergo CPR en route to Wollongong Hospital just before 4pm.
