Both Kurri Kurri and Lismore are towns becoming famous for their outdoor or 'street' art, and Wingham could be set to join them, if things go according to plan.
Chamber president Donna Carrier has been following acclaimed street artist Guido van Helten on Facebook, and as often happens with Donna's creative mind, his work sparked an idea.
Donna had been eyeing off the blank wall of Wingham Newsagency in the alley way as one possible canvas at first. Her eye has since roved over other blank walls in the business district while thinking of the possibilities of blank space.
"It's an opportunity for us to become another mural town, and also to have murals within business to have people weaving in and out of the businesses," Donna says.
"But we don't have to be just another mural town; we could be part of a mural trail!"
Donna says there are already a number of great murals in town. She mentions an old-fashioned mural on the side of Bent on Life, murals inside the Australian Hotel and the CWA building, and the outdoor murals at the Garden Grub Cafe in Isabella Street and on the car park wall at Wingham Plaza.
The chamber committee has applied for a $9000 grant to get the project started, while the chamber of commerce has offered $5000 and local businesses $1500 to assist.
The chamber of commerce will not know if they will receive the funding until September this year.
If the application is unsuccessful, Donna says the chamber will "just keep on applying."
Discussions have begun with Arts Mid North Coast and Mid North Coast Tourism and Donna hopes to have the project listed on the Legendary Pacific Coast website as a tourist attraction.
Plans are to keep the project within the scope of Wingham's heritage aspect and natural assets.
