Work is due to start by the middle of this year and will take around a year to complete, weather permitting.
The work is essential to meet current bridge and B-double route standards and to reduce possible future damage to the bridge, member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead said.
Mr Bromhead said Roads and Maritime has looked at various options to minimise the inconvenience caused by the work and two options have been shortlisted for community feedback.
