Recent changes to the disability sector, including the introduction of DisabilityCare Australia, will be discussed at the My Choice Matters workshop in Taree next Tuesday 17 September.
My Choice Matters is an initiative of the NSW Government that supports people with disability and families move to a more ‘person centred’ approach, making it easier for people with disability to say what they want, get the support they need and take control of the way they live.
35-year-old Leigh Creighton, of Newcastle, lives by his motto: “believe in yourself and go for your dreams and live every single moment to the fullest”.
Leigh, who has Down syndrome, will share his passion for disability advocacy and public speaking when he presents at the Taree workshop on Tuesday at Club Taree between 9.30am and 1pm.
“I think people with disability like me should get out there and experience all that they can. I will be talking at the workshop about having choices and making decisions on how your life will be now and in the future,” Leigh said.
Leigh believes in people with disability having greater choice and control in their own lives. “It gives you a feeling of independence when you have goals and dreams. It doesn’t matter what they are. Your dream could be to spend time with your family or to jump out of a plane.”
Leigh’s future goals include getting married and having kids and pursuing his love of travel with a trip to the Greek islands.
The workshop is free and is for people with disability and family members. Attendees will be able to hear more from Leigh and contribute to the future of My Choice Matters initiatives.
