Over the past few years, our small Taree West Men’s Club has done a great job to get representatives to the NSW State Titles and this year has been one of the Club’s best years ever.
Last week we saw the Dom Riley and Tony Hinton do the Club proud and mix it with the State’s best in the Open Pairs competition, and this week we had Rob Piper, Bill Hilton and Jim Matthews doing battle in the President’s Triples competition.
Rob and his team came agonisingly close to making the semi-final playoffs after winning 2 of their 3 games in the preliminary rounds, but in the end it was not meant to be.
Round 1 saw the lads have a solid 28-19 win against the Walcha team. In round 2 our boys were on the green for over 4 hours against the Bathurst City team. The slow green and corresponding slow play by the opposition (ask Rob) did not exactly help West’s cause, but Rob and the boys fought hard till the end to lose in a cliff hanger 23-21. West backed up in their final game to win in a hard fought contest over the Bega boys 23-19, but fell just short of making the playoffs.
I spoke to Rob after he returned from the State playoffs, and no one will be surprised to hear that he amplified just how well both Dom and Tony, and then his team of Bill and Jim represented our Club in brilliant fashion during the competition.
On a lighter side, there is some conjecture that Billy Hilton may need to visit Specsavers after he had some off green misadventures with a couple of glass panels. Anyone requiring further information on Bill’s eyesight should speak to Rob Piper.
Thanks to Chookie Piper and Nancy Matthews who followed our Taree lads down to support them in their quest. A little birdie tells me that both ladies may have a story or two of their own to describe the full extent of the week’s events.
Well done to all our West competitors on getting to the pointy-end of the Sate competition, and good luck to Rob Piper who in around 3 weeks travels down to Ettalong yet again to compete in the State President's Singles competition. I think Roberto will give it a real shake.
An in-house Pennant trial is set down for this Friday evening to be played under lights in conjunction with our Club Triples Final.
Please let Selectors know if you are unavailable for the trial.
