The event was put together courtesy of a collaboration between the Taree A&H Society, Chris Taylor and “THA Boys” demolition derby crew and the Manning River Lions Club.
What started as a small idea grew into a great afternoon, with many other community groups rolling up their sleeves to help the farmers.
Club Taree Community Concert Band was joined by a number of players from Manning Valley Concert Band for the concert, including Michael Clare, Mark Nixon, Mary Camphuis and Bob Berrigan’s band.
THA Boys auctioned six cars which had been donated by Manning Auto Salvage, Wiffen Real Estate and Taree Tilt Tray Towing. These were purchased by local business houses to be auctioned for the Taree Show’s demolition derby.
The cars were prepared for auction with the support of North Coast Auto Wreckers, McAlpin and Maurer, Manning River Steel, Mal’s Paint Supplies, Taree Rocket Tools and Kennards.
Manning River Lions manned the gate and sold raffle tickets for prizes donated by Goldmark Taree, Manning Hotel, Taree Railway Bowling Club, Taree Leagues Club, Karma’s OCD Carpet Cleaning, Bass N Blues Megastore, Officeworks Taree, SpecSavers Taree and Club Taree Community Concert Band.
The Lions also manned the cake stall, which was supplied with homemade cakes and slices, much of which was made by musical director Floyd Goodwin’s Nan, Mrs Taggart.
The sausage sizzle, ably cooked by the Kundle/Moto Rural Fire Service Brigade members, was supplied by Club Taree Community Concert Band, supported by Hooked on Bread who supplied a quantity of bread and Taree West Butchery and McGrath’s Meats who both supplied a quantity of sausages.
Other groups to participate were Manning Valley Historical Car Club, which presented Chris Taylor a cheque for $500 on the day, Manning Valley Cruisers, which donated $1000, Midcoast Drag Racing Club, which organised a show and shine with all moneys raised going to the fundraiser.
Prizes were donated by Mike Brasher from Taree Tidy Cars and H C Trophies.
Manning Valley Rescue Association put on rescue demonstrations with a car donated by All Vehicle Services, Ron Batman-Fairy Floss who donated his day’s takings and Mr Whippy.
Members of the band as well as members of the public brought in non-perishable goods.
These goods filled the van of ‘Do it for our Farmers’ volunteer Sandra McBeth for distribution to needy families.
In all, around 39 groups, individuals and businesses contributed to this great afternoon with $ 6,143.30 raised for drought stricken farmers.
