Last month the school sent 27 students to Newcastle to compete and the 2018 campaign was described as successful and emotional for the two teams.
“For some of these students this was their sixth and final year of representing St Clare’s and so there was a mixture of both excitement and a little sadness as they boarded the bus,” Mrs Parvin said.

The open girls team “played extremely well throughout the championships” and consisted of Jennifer Wesley, Abby Collison, Zoe Elliott, Samanther Annetts, Hannah Brown, Chelsea Green, Lillian Smith, Domonique Wyse, Tilley Hunter, Kirra Forsayth, Eliza Forsayth, Astyn Strybis, Makayla Harris and Jazmine O’Byrne.
They placed 5th overall amongst the 20 teams that competed.
“The team consisted of a variety of age groups and all of the girls played well together.
“Zoe and Chelsea shared the role of the goal keeper and they both displayed excellent co-ordination and reaction time. Jennifer, Abby, Zoe, Samanther and Hannah were excellent role models for the younger players. Lillian Smith and Domonique Wyse demonstrated an excellent work ethic by never giving up. Tilley Hunter displayed amazing control of the ball and she scored some brilliant goals. Kirra and Eliza Forsayth, Mikayla Harris, Astyn Strybis and Jasmine O’Byrne made their debut and I am confident will continue to ensure that our hockey team is well represented in years to come.”
The open boys team “had a unique combination of experienced players, those on their debut for St Clare’s and those pretty much on their debut with hockey.”
The team consisted of Matthew Parvin, Eamon Smith, Wade Harry, Kyle Brady, Macabe Grass, Will Smith, Harry Cassar, Isaac Cross, Gab Poole, Kye Lewis, Fraser Crossingham, Lachlan Oliver and Vaughn Strybis.
Mrs Parvin said the team “commitment to achieve for their school was unwavering.”
“Their first day of play saw two convincing wins to Warnervale and Gosford. There were moments of sheer brilliance mixed with those of sheer beginner’s luck. All provided great entertainment.”
“The boys moved through to the quarter finals where they met Tamworth, the team that defeated them in the semi-finals in 2017. In a nail biting game the boys played their hearts out and had many opportunities to score. Eventually they were defeated 3 goals to 2.”
“Once again the trip was extremely successful. Much fun was had, friends were made, birthdays were celebrated and some great hockey was played. A special thanks to Steve Parvin for coaching and umpiring.”
