The West, with a squad of only seven players, were defeated by Crestwood in the final played at Cronulla. Crestwood fielded 12 players in their side and had more basketball experience than the Taree West girls.
The competition was contested by 300 schools. Taree West’s campaign started in May against Manning schools, where they cruised through the early rounds. West continued on their winning way against Tanilba Bay before clinching the Hunter Region title by defeating Ashtonfield 45-25 to progress to the final eight in the State.
Taree West also made the final eight last year, but drew the eventual winners in the quarter final to bow out of contention.
However, the experience gained from 2017 provided beneficial this year. Taree West accounted for Kororo Public School 50-38 in the quarter final and Beelbangera Public 40-33 in the semi to set up the showdown with Crestwood.
Coach Jessica Munro said captain and State representative Annika Scott was outstanding for Taree West in all games. However, she added that as many of the players had limited basketball experience, it was a tremendous effort, thanking Col Scott for assisting with the coaching.
Team members were Olivia Dawson, Bailey Deas, Hannah Dignam, Mia Wall, Jasmine Hill, Annika Scott, Alyssa Ferrari.
