The three St Clare’s High School students presented their hirsute legs for hair removal with hot wax on March 14 as part of the school’s participation in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave fundraising campaign.

It was a bold, painful move for the boys and one they hoped would inspire students, family and friends to cough up cash on the St Clare’s High School team page on the World’s Greatest Shave website.
For Macabe the choice to take part honoured Wes Austin, a loved family friend and next door neighbour who died in December last year after fighting a long, hard battle with cancer.
“I’d known Wes since I was four, he used to put me on the school bus and he was 79 when he died,” Macabe said.
“He got cancer about five years ago, had chemo and got better but then he got secondary cancer and had another struggle with it, he really went down hill from there. It was pretty bad.
“One day I saw him down the street and he did not know who I was and that was pretty hard. The fight was so hard, he couldn’t do what he loved and he just loved playing with his cars and stuff but he was just gutted all the time.”

The motivation for Joel Dark to wax his legs was different.
“The way I see it is that if I am fit and am able to help out, so I should. Cancer affects everyone and everyone can relate to it.”
“I play footy and shave my ankles to make it easier to take the tape off, so it (the waxing) will be good for me and also help out!”
St Clare’s student representative council (SRC) co-ordinator Eloise Thomas said the leg waxing was part of a larger school event that also saw students Lachlan Shannon-Brown and Odin Augey shave their heads, teacher Phil Gibney shave his head and teacher, Mrs Grant colour her hair. Lachlan Shannon-Brown individually raised $742, Odin Augey raised $400 and in an earlier shave event at Mondrook Hall, student Elise Rourke raised $3836.
“The St Clare’s team raised another $1812. It was a considerable effort by the SRC and enjoyed by all,” Eloise said.
“The generosity and support of staff, parents and our students was outstanding. The SRC should be proud they helped to decrease the impact of blood cancer, by funding research to find tomorrow’s cures, cures that might just save a life, cures that maybe one day will save the life of someone who is close to you.”
