Police said at about 4pm Friday Manning/Great Lakes Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were conducting stationary speed checks on the Pacific Highway at Nabiac when they detected an Audi A3 with red “P” plates travelling south in excess of the 100kph posted speed limit.
Police say they attempted to stop the vehicle, which failed to do so, and a police pursuit was initiated. The Audi was pursued through the township of Coolongolook and the Bulahdelah bypass reaching speeds of up to 200kph.
Police said the pursued vehicle was overtaking other motorists in the break down lanes of the highway during the course of the pursuit. Spikes were successfully deployed south of Nerong at which point the Audi drove across the northbound lanes before coming to a stop.
Police said the driver ran from the scene into a nearby paddock, leaving behind his two passengers.
They said an 18-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was clearly traumatised by the incident. The driver was arrested about one kilometre from the vehicle.
The driver was taken to Forster Police Station where he was charged with:
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously (Skye’s Law)
- Drive in a manner dangerous to the public
- Exceed speed
- Drive whilst disqualified
The driver was bail refused to appear at Taree Bail Court on Saturday, March 17.
UPDATE: The driver appeared before the court on March 17 and was refused bail. The driver was to appear at Taree Local Court on Monday, March 19.
