In first division, James Smith could not have got off to a better start when he recorded a 15-13 fifth game win over the experienced Darryl Moscatt, only to see Matt Donoghue repeat the story in second division. Promoted from third grade, Donoghue had to fight long and hard to overcome another experienced player, Allan Faugeras and earned a 17-15 win in the fifth.
The match of the night was played out in second division when Alison Haigh met Katie Pennell. While it was all over in three with Haigh taking the honours, there was plenty of great action. The next time these two meet Haigh will again have to be at her very best as Pennell will be keen to reverse this result. Trevor Brown started with a win when he edged out Michelle McGillivray in third division.
Gary Smith had to have his mind on the job to hold out the improving Andrew Gucul.
Monday night’s second round provided an absorbing match in the top grade between Darren Sherry and Darryl Moscatt and while it may have had some unorthodox moments it was thoroughly engrossing with both players giving their all.
The outcome may have been a result of Sherry’s occasionally unconventional shots or Moscatt’s strangely unreliable short game but it was Sherry who got over the line 9-7 in the fifth leaving the onlookers thoroughly entertained.
In other matches Alison Haigh found a way home to take a 10-8 fifth game win over Justin Mather while Allan Faugeras outlasted Larissa Collins for a 9-6 fifth game win.
Glenn Weir and Barry Ruprecht share the lead in second division after Weir defeated Michelle McGilvray and Ruprecht downed Toni Vause in four.
