Started by the Suffragettes in the early 1900s, the first International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911.
Gloucester’s Katheryn Smith is among the women who are being publicly celebrated in the MidCoast Council region and will be speaking at an IWD event in North Arm Cove on Thursday, March 8 at the local hall.
Katheryn has been involved in local government since successfully being voted onto the former Gloucester Shire council in 2008.
Two years after being elected onto council her profile was published in a booklet called Rewarding, Inspiring, Fulfilling: What Women Say about Local Government. It was one of the NSW Government's contributions to the Year of Women in Local Government in 2010 and was a compilation of a diverse group of women sharing their stories about working in Local Government.
In 2014 she became former Gloucester Shire Council’s deputy mayor and held the position until the forced council amalgamation with Greater Taree and Great Lakes councils in May 2016.
During her time as Gloucester’s deputy mayor she was nominated for a Ministers' Awards for Women in Local Government.
She was the only Gloucester candidate successfully voted onto the newly formed MidCoast Council in 2017 and has become its first deputy mayor.
