"It was a really cool experience and I liked getting the chance to sing with a musical legend.”
Kalin was one of five children from the Manning region selected for the opportunity to be the first to join Kamahl as he sang ‘Amazing Grace’ to a full house.
On Saturday, February 10, Kalin, his brother Corben, Katelyn Davidson, Kiara Conway and Zoe Hutchison joined 15 other excited young performers for a sound check and their first meeting with musical legend, Kamahl.
“He made us feel like we were stars,” nine year old Katelyn Davidson reflected.
“Kamahl is an amazing, kind singer and it was an honour to sing with him.”
“Singing with Kamahl was an amazing experience. It's something I will remember for the rest of my life,” added Kiara Conway.
At 83 years old, Kamahl was still at the top of his game as the children joined him on stage for the last two songs of the evening.
It was a late night for the young performers, but well worth the lost sleep, with many of the audience members complimented their efforts afterwards.
The show was expressed as a 'this is your life' concept, with a Q&A session during which Kamahl shared the story of his career and personal life with the audience.
Mother of young performer Zoe, Jenny Hutchison said there was an air of excitement and anticipation in the Glasshouse Theatre before the show.
“Kamahl is a humble and down to earth performer, enjoying mixing with his audience, sharing a joke - often at his own expense,” she said.
“It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, sharing in what felt like an intimate and private meeting with a man who has been instrumental in creating fond musical memories for many generations.
“It was a lovely night and it's one that the kids will be able to talk about for a long time to come.”
