Semi-finals and the final were all decided at Forster and all players are to be congratulated on the games that they played.
In the first semi involved teams skipped by George McCartney (Sporties) and Stewart Bills (Tuncurry Beach). Scores were close early before McCartney went on a run of seven ends where he scored 12 shots to establish a lead of 19-8. Bills’ team then came back, winning the next five ends and tied the scores at 19-19. Scores were then level several times until it was 24-24 with just the last end to be played. Bills scored a single shot to progress to the final 25-24.
The second semi was between two teams from Taree Leagues skipped by Phil Lindfield and Bill Brett. Again we had a cracking game with scores close early until Brett scored a five to lead 14-8. Lindfield then won six of the next seven ends and led 18-15. Brett then came back and with the last end to play the scores were locked 19-19. This then came down to the last bowl of the game with Brett managing to score one to snatch a win.
The final saw Bill Hedges, Brian Smith and Stewart Bills (Tuncurry Beach) up against Peter Woolley, Warren Cocksedge and Bill Brett (Taree Leagues). The green had by this stage reached a pace of 16+ seconds and was running beautifully.
After seven ends scores were 5-5. Bills’ team then won five of six ends and had a lead of 11-6. Over the next five ends the margin remained at five shots before Brett edged back to trail 16-15 with just four ends to play.
Bills then scored a couple of singles to lead 18-15. Brett then played two telling bowls. Trailing by three and one down at the head, he touched the jack to then hold the shot, and then with his second bowl he moved the jack again to make a score of four. Brett then went into the last end with a one shot lead. Despite the shot changing several times on this last end Bills was unable to score that vital shot, and Brett scored a two to run out 21-18 winner.
