Reluctant young hero Lucas Kloosterhoff has kicked off the upcoming soccer season early with a Certificate of Excellence from his proud club, Wallamba Football Club.
Lucas, along with fellow hero Aimee Carlin, bravely leapt into the surf at Tuncurry to rescue a young man struggling in a rip during the Christmas holidays.
Presenting Lucas with the certificate this week, Wallamba FC president Dave Weller said it was important that the football club acknowledge the selfless act of one of its players.
“I was in Canada over the summer and couldn’t believe it when my phone kept pinging with news of young Lucas’ efforts. Needless to say, we are extremely proud to know that a fellow Wallamba player acted so bravely and decisively,” Dave said.
Lucas, a lifesaver with the Black Head club and champion swimmer as well as an accomplished soccer player, seemed to take the whole thing in his stride.
“He didn’t seem to think it was anything very special,’’ his dad, Johan said.
“His version of events was much less dramatic than the police’s account. I’ll take the police’s word for it any day. We are extremely proud of him.”
“We are just happy that Lucas is active and participates in sport, whether it’s swimming or soccer. It’s obviously been worth the effort.”
Registrations for local soccer clubs across the region are open now for the upcoming season to start after Easter.
