Tourists contribute more than just money to our region during their holidays and with their arrival MidCoast Council must adjust how its team manages waste.
“While everyone is enjoying there holidays, staff at water and sewage treatment plants are hard at work to cope with the peak demand for both services during this time of the year,” says a MidCoast Council spokesperson.
“Sewage flow into the Forster Sewage Treatment Plant can double at Christmas holiday times, and this is common at all coastal sewage treatment plants. The same thing happens with the water supply. Demand can go from approximately 22 megalitres a day up to 40 megalitres a day for that peak period.”
Waste management also sees MidCoast Council collect rubbish from public place litter bins seven days a week instead of three collections a week in peak holiday areas and bulk bins are also set up in various spots across the region.
”Figures indicate recycling increases by approximately 25 per cent during the holiday period and waste increases by approximately 30 per cent during the holiday period across the entire local government area. It is estimated the waste doubles in holiday areas such as Pacific Palms, Forster, Tuncurry, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Harrington and Old Bar.
